Homes for Our Troops Announces Campaign to Build 100 More Homes for Severely Disabled Veterans

During the week of Veterans Day 2010, Homes for Our Troops will launch the 100 More…Homes for Our Troops campaign. The campaign will officially launch on Saturday, November 13 at a special performance at 7 p.m. at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, Tenn. where Staff Sergeant Heath Calhoun and his family will be honored. SSG Calhoun who was injured in Iraq in 2003 and lost both legs, receives his home the morning of November 13 in Clarksville, Tennessee. Homes for Our Troops, a nonprofit veteran support organization, builds specially adapted homes and gives them, mortgage free, to a veteran with life-altering injuries as a result of serving in Iraq or Afghanistan following September 11, 2001.

Between November 10-13, Homes for Our Troops will also present keys to specialized homes to four additional disabled veterans: Browntown, Va., November 10 (SSG Arthur Woods); Trussville, Ala., November 11 (SFC Scot Noss); Chester, Md., November 11 (CPT Ferris Butler); and Plainfield, Ill., November 13 (SPC Frank Pierson). Homes for Our Troops has built or has under construction 100 homes in 30 states. A backlog of severely disabled veterans currently awaits homes, and the number of eligible applicants continues to grow.

General Richard Cody, retired U.S. Army General and former Vice Chief of Staff of the U.S. Army, will serve as chairman of the new campaign with support from former Dateline NBC co-host Stone Phillips and others. The Honorary Congressional Committee will be co-chaired by Massachusetts Senator Scott Brown, joined by House and Senate colleagues.

Homes for Our Troops founder, John Gonsalves said, “This campaign is a wonderful, tangible opportunity for Americans to give back the freedom and independence that has been lost due to life-altering injuries suffered by our injured veterans.”

BENEFIT CONCERT TO RAISE SUPPORT FOR KENYA'S CHILDREN OUTREACH

On November 19th Woodmont Hills Church in Nashville will host a benefit concert to raise funds for a missions trip to serve Kenya’s Children, a mission outreach to serve African orphanages and medical clinics that are located in Nairobi, Kenya. The benefit concert will feature Merging Blue, an Americana vocal trio, as well as other surprise special guests. Complete concert information can be found below.

Kenya’s Children was formed as a effort to help raise money and awareness for several orphanages and medical clinics in Nairobi, Kenya who have lost funding. Due to the vast financial cuts orphanages like the Ring Road Orphanage in the slums of Mathare have had to cut the evening meal being given to the children. In June 2011 a team will go to Nairobi, Kenya to serve within the various orphanages, medical clinics and schools. The money raised during this benefit concert will assist in this missionary effort.

Merging Blue is an Americana vocal trio made up of George Pendergrass, Lydia Gott and Heather Lawson who merge three rich and varied lives in music. Embracing and assimilating blues, soul, gospel, bluegrass, country and rock, Merging Blue finds the sweet spots and the common ground in American music.

“We are appealing to three distinct groups in Music City,” shares George Pendergrass with Merging Blue and will be traveling to Africa with the mission. “The artist and lovers of great music, the philanthropers who are the backbone and support of all the great and worthwhile happenings in the city, and people of faith who believe that music and service transcend all barriers and speaks the language of all nations."
