BEATEN AWAKE TO RELEASE THUNDER$TROKE

Beaten Awake will release their sophomore album, Thunder$troke, October 13, 2009 on Fat Possum.

Thunder$troke is a lo-fi, alternately heavy and rocking, dreamy and rolling landscape of fuzzy bass, resonating drums, and guitars channeled through a late '70s Fender Super Reverb amp. The members of Beaten Awake have been fixtures of the Kent, OH, music scene since the late '90s, playing in a number of bands that include Harriet The Spy, The Party of Helicopters, The Man I Fell In Love With, and "New" Terror Class. Thunder$troke - from the humming, melodic title track to the driving indie rock of "Gyro Quake" to the dreamy, ambling "Coming Home" - serves in many ways as a document of not only the music they're making at this time, but also of their continuing dedication to and pride in that musical community.

Thunder$troke was recorded over the past year in Akron, OH, with Patrick Carney (of The Black Keys) and Jeff France at Audio Eagle Studios and with Tim Gerak at the Woolly Mammoth Studios. The album follows their 2007 debut, Let's Get Simplified, which was released jointly by Carney's label, Audio Eagle, and Fat Possum, and a single, Coming Home, released by Fat Possum in May. Most recently the band toured with The Black Keys, Heartless Bastards, and Dax Riggs, and has opened for and played as the backing band of Daniel Johnston. Jon Finley (who also sings in Carney's new band, Drummer) and Ryan Brannon formed Beaten Awake in 2005.

Track listing for Thunder$troke:

1. Mr. Thompson (Can you dig it?)
2. Suite Cheetah
3. Thunder$troke
4. Gyro Quake
5. I'm Not Asking For The Moon
6. Coming Home
7. Danger Pins
8. (untitled)
9. Mr. Thompson
10. Halo V
11. I Shot The Mayor, Not The Deputy Mayor

Beaten Awake is: Jon Finley (vocals, guitar, keys, drums), Ryan Brannon (drums, guitar, bass, keys), Tom Raichel (bass, keys), and Gabe Schray (baritone guitar). Joel McAdams, who played on all three releases and sang lead vocals on some tracks, has since departed the band.

42 Conventions and Events Expected in Nashville for September

September will welcome 43,100 people to Music City for conventions and meetings, up slightly from the 43,000 August visitors but down from the 49,000 convention attendees in July.

The Nashville Convention and Visitors Bureau is expecting 42 conventions and events in Nashville this month.

Large conventions include the International Bluegrass Music Association, which is bringing an estimated 24,000 people to its week-long annual World of Bluegrass event on Sept. 28 through Oct. 4. The event will be held at the Nashville Convention Center and downtown area hotels.

The National Guard Association of the United States will hold its 131st General Conference at the Gaylord Opryland Resort and Convention Center on Sept. 11-13. Meeting planners expect more than 2,300 will attend.

Later in the month, 3,000 people will attend the Comfortech convention on Sept. 23-26. And 4,500 people people are expected at the Mothers of Preschoolers International convention at the Gaylord Opryland hotel on Sept. 24-26.

Nashville Job Market for Finance and Accounting Professionals to Expand

The labor market is expected to ease for Nashville accounting and finance professionals in the fourth quarter, according to staffing firm Robert Half International.

Eight percent of chief financial officers surveyed plan to add staff during the quarter, and 5 percent anticipate reductions in personnel, according to the firm’s Financial Hiring Index. The net 3 percent increase is up two points from the third-quarter forecast for Nashville and nine points above the national average.

"Companies recognize that carefully chosen accounting and finance staff are critical to their efforts to manage what remains of the recession and to take advantage of growth opportunities once conditions improve," said Max Messmer, chairman and CEO of Robert Half International. "Firms also are tapping the expanded pool of available professionals to upgrade the skills and expertise of their teams," he said.

Southwest Adds/Cuts Some Flights from Nashville

Southwest Airlines Co. is adding flights from Nashville to Orlando and Phoenix between January and March.

The airline will fly five flights instead of four to Orlando from Nashville International Airport and three flights instead of two from Nashville to Phoenix, the airport said Tuesday.

The additions are part of Southwest's (NYSE: LUV) plans to add 32 round-trip flights but cut another 42 round-trip flights for schedules that run from Jan. 10 through March 12.

The changes will mean a loss of 10 round-trip flights during the early 2010 travel period, Southwest said. A spokesman for the airline said 92 markets will be affected by the changes.

The airline says it's adjusting its flight schedule due to changing traffic patterns. Southwest uses optimization technology to help assess customer demand and add value, a spokeswoman for the airline said, noting that scheduling changes at Southwest occur throughout the year.

Nashville International has 12 carriers and more than 360 arriving and departing flights operating out of 47 gates. The airport serves 77 markets, but only has non-stop service to 46.

Opry Country Classics Returns

Opry Country Classics, a special version of the famed Grand Ole Opry, will be presented by Cracker Barrel Old Country Store this fall for an eight-week run beginning Sept. 10.

Among the award-winning artists scheduled to perform are Moe Bandy, Terri Clark, Jimmy Dickens, Larry Gatlin, Vince Gill, Jamey Johnson, George Jones, Ray Price, Joe Stampley, Marty Stuart, Mel Tillis, Pam Tillis and Tanya Tucker.

The show, which debuted last spring, will again feature storytelling and vintage video clips as well as performances of country classics by legends and today’s newcomers. The season’s first show, “Country Music Goes to the Movies,” will feature classics including “Coca-Cola Cowboy” from Mel Tillis, Coal Miner’s Daughter and a favorite or two from the award-winning movie soundtrack, O Brother, Where Art Thou? Among those who will appear will be Tillis and The Whites.

Nashville International Airport Launches Interior Renovations

Renovations at Nashville International Airport are moving inside this fall as the road construction work wraps up at the end of October.

The airport is launching the $18 million second phase of its terminal renovation project, which will target restrooms and gate areas.

That means travelers may have to go in search of available restrooms or have to sit at a nearby gate instead of their exact gate while waiting on flights, says Emily Richard, spokeswoman for the airport.

This phase of the construction, which will employ 125 people, is slated to be completed in early 2011.

“Travelers could be inconvenienced by restroom closures and the hold room areas,” Richard says. “We are reminding people they are going to have to pay special attention because you may be in a hold room that’s not with everyone on your flight.”

Phase one of the project included new food, beverage and retail vendors, a consolidated security checkpoint and new flight information displays. The $40 million project was completed on time and on budget in January.

For phase two, 95 percent of the funding will come from passenger facility charges collected through airline tickets and 5 percent from airport revenue.

Existing restrooms will be renovated, and new restrooms will be added on the first floor in the A concourse. The airport also is changing the terminal and concourse carpeting and tile, replacing heating and air-conditioning units, and renovating gate holding rooms. The ticket lobby will be enlarged, and baggage claim will be renovated as well.

The renovations will be environmentally friendly, with low-flow fixtures in the restrooms, recycled carpeting and energy efficient lights. The airport plans to reuse materials from airfield projects. New countertops will be made of a natural stone product.

The renovation work is a key for small businesses. “It really does give a company like ourselves an opportunity to be in there and be in the bidding process,” says Jimmy Boulton, vice president of Boulton Enterprises, which will be doing the painting for the project.

The Nashville-based commercial painting company employs 29 people, and it expects six to work on the airport job.

Come October, travelers will be able to get in to the airport easier as the road construction will be completed. The cell phone lot also reopens in October, in time for the busy Thanksgiving travel period.
